After cosmetic insertions like liposuction, bariatric, and face lifting, now height-increasing surgery has made it to the news. According to a report, a man in the US has spent near to Rs 60 lakh to increase his height by a few inches. "That entailed having both his femurs broken, and adjustable metal nails inserted down their centres. Each nail is made of titanium, which is both flexible and sturdy, like bone, and about the size of a piccolo. The nails were extended one millimetre every day for about 90 days via a magnetic remote control," stated GQ.

Asked about why he wanted to increase his height, the man said, "I noticed that taller people just seem to have it easier. The world seems to bend for them. People just look at you differently when you're tall. I already get a lot more looks at the gym."

Dr Pulkit Sharma, a mental health expert shared concern over the poor mental health of people undergoing such surgeries. Cosmetic surgeries are an indication of poor mental health and poor self-image. He explained, "When an individual has a poor self-image and thinks of themselves as undesirable, they tend to focus on their physical appearance."

Dr Sharma further shed light on the mental health status of these patients. He said, "It is not only height increase surgery, but people may also turn against their weight, looks, scars or any physical aspect they do not think is perfect. We call it, body dysmorphic disorder.

Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health condition in which you can't stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance, a flaw that appears minor or can't be seen by others. But you may feel so embarrassed, ashamed and anxious that you may avoid many social situations.

The expert said, "It does not end here. After the surgery, the person may direct his gaze to some other appearance."

These surgeries are not only an indication of poor mental health in an individual but also a dangerous and negative aspect of society. "The professional conducting these surgeries should be the ones reporting these issues," said Dr Sharma.

These surgeries are not life-saving surgeries but can be life-threatening.

A common surgical approach involves cutting the bone in a key area and the other is applying metal pins and screws to the bone, attaching external metal devices to the pins. Doctors call these devices "fixators" and they help to pull the cut area of the bone apart to encourage new bone growth.

Once a person achieves their desired results, a doctor will remove the pins. The maximum amount a surgeon can lengthen the legs varies but is usually limited to around 7 centimetres.

Because limb-lengthening procedures are invasive, there are risks. These include reactions to anaesthesia, bleeding, and infections, particularly at the pin sites.

One review of literature about bone-lengthening surgery procedures and outcomes reports that up to 100 per cent of people who have leg-lengthening surgery have some type of complication, but most people don't experience major complications.

There's also a risk the surgery will be ineffective due to the bones improperly healing. Some patients may also heal in a way where the bones are not straight.
