The four riders underwent medical checks ahead of the UK Round following their respective injuries

Four riders in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship who had previously been declared unfit will make their return to action at Donington Park for the Prosecco DOC UK Round. Xavi Vierge (Team HRC), Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) and Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) will all be taking part throughout the UK Round as they look to secure strong results on their return to action.

Vierge was injured in Race 2 at the Emilia-Romagna Round after a crash at Misano and underwent surgery on the injury, after he was diagnosed with a fracture of the third metacarpal bone on his right hand and fracture of the left capitate and hamate bones of the right wrist. He was forced to miss a Team HRC test day at Donington as well as at Misano, although he was with the team for the latter test but has been able to restart his training ahead of the UK Round.

French rider Mahias was injured in the Estoril Round when he crashed in the Tissot Superpole Race on the opening lap and was diagnosed with a fracture to his fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand. Mahias missed the Emilia-Romagna Round, where he was replaced by Tito Rabat as he continued his recovery, but the French rider will return to action after being able to spend the five-week break recovering.

Mahias’ compatriot Ponsson was another who underwent surgery between rounds after he sustained a broken right collarbone and sprained cervical ligament in a Race 1 crash at Misano, highsiding at Turn 4. He was forced to miss the remainder of the weekend at Misano and had surgery in Monaco on the injury where a plate and screws were fitted. However, with the gap in the calendar allowing for injured riders to recovery, Ponsson will be back on track at Donington but will be reassessed after Friday morning’s Free Practice 1 session.

Czech rider Konig, like Ponsson, had surgery on a broken collarbone although on his left rather than right. Injured during training between rounds, Konig has returned to training following the surgery and the WorldSBK rookie will return to competitive action in the United Kingdom as he aims for his first points of the 2022 campaign.
